“The Complete Book of Mothers, without the Internet, is an Islamic jurisprudential encyclopedia, based on the collection of the doctrine of Imam Al-Shafi’i and its final rulings. Al-Shafi’i wrote it as a dictation in Egypt, after he had rested from traveling and settled in Egypt, and did not leave it. The book represents the summary of his ideas that had matured and settled, as if it were a new and necessary reading of a sentence. The views he embraced in Mecca and Baghdad, and he saw, by virtue of long experience and contemplation, the necessity of expressing and rejecting many of them.

In this sense, the book represents what Al-Shafi’i settled on in his jurisprudence and his ijtihad on issues of Sharia. In it he collected books and letters that he had written during his long wanderings, and before settling in Egypt, and then he dictated all of that to the student of Al-Rabi’ bin Suleiman. The title “The Mother” suggests that the book brings together what Al-Shafi’i jurisprudence concluded. Every student of jurisprudence, knowledge, and interpretation... returns to his heart and finds with him the mother who helps her children in understanding matters of their religion, beliefs, acts of worship, transactions and limits... and guides them to the path of goodness and righteousness.

Al-Shafi’i benefited from Abu Hanifa’s approach in arranging the chapters on the mother. Abu Hanifa begins with purity, and so does Al-Shafi’i in the mother. Purity is followed by the chapters on prayer according to Abu Hanifa and Al-Shafi’i, because the first thing a Muslim is required to do is prayer, which is the most specific act of worship, and the difference between a Muslim and an infidel is abandoning prayer, and there is no prayer without purification, so purity was the prelude and entrance to prayer.
