The Shona language belongs to the Bantu language group of the Niger-Congo language family which is majorly spoken by the Shona people of Zimbabwe. 80% of people in Zimbabwe are Shona speakers. Shona speakers are also found in Zambia, Mozambique, and Botswana.

The Shona language has three major dialects, 1)Karanga, 2) Zezuru and 3) Korekore. These 3 dialects have 10.8 million speakers worldwide. The Shona language has two tones: high and low but only in a spoken form not in writing.

A historic written document of the Shona language was found in the early 20th century and a novel Feso by Soloman Mutswairo was found and published in 1957. The Shona language is taught in the schools but it isn't a medium of instruction.
