Until the opening of the Humboldt Forum the exhibition ‘Beyond Compare: Art from Africa in the Bode Museum’ shows outstanding African works of art from the Ethnological Museum together with unique works taken from the European Sculpture Collection. Experimental juxtapositions and groupings of objects according to themes such power, death, beauty, identity, justice, and memory reveal their connections and differences.
This multimedia app is the ideal companion for a visit to the exhibition.
The most important functions at a glance:
• A variety of tours through the exhibition
• Indoor navigation
• Short text and audio commentary from the curators on each object pairing
• In-depth, partially multimedia content on each object pairing
• Favourites list
• App available in German or English
The exhibition ‘Beyond Compare’ stretches over the entire Bode-Museum: Artworks from both continents are displayed on the two main floors through 22 juxtaposed pairs of artworks. About a hundred further European and African objects are displayed in a special gallery, illuminating six overarching topics.
The app guides you through the museum intuitively with the use of intelligent location detection and object localization. On the map, you can view your current location and the nearby exhibits at any time.
For each object pairing and group of works, the app offers exciting background information from the perspective of art, cultural history, and ethnology. It provides short introductions, as well as the possibility to delve deeper into the subject matter. The app will be updated after the exhibition’s opening, with more information and commentaries due to be posted, revealing yet more perspectives.
You can choose time-based tours through the museum, explore the works on the basis of specific interests, or individually discover the exhibition and display contents on request as you stand before the objects.
In addition, you can save your favourites and comfortably learn more about them after your visit.
Please feel free to send suggestions and comments to kommunikation@smb.spk-berlin.de.
The exhibition and app have been generously funded by the Kuratorium Preußischer Kulturbesitz.
