The National Professional Soccer League of Honduras, through several of its sponsors, carries out the most important professional soccer tournament in Honduras. This soccer league was founded on May 10, 1964. Its first tournament was held in 1965, with the participation of 10 clubs. Its first champion was the Club Deportivo Platense and its last champion was Olimpia.
From the 1965/66 season to 1996/1997 the League held one tournament per year. Thereafter, the league's competition system changed, resulting in two tournaments per year. These tournaments called, Opening and Closing, have had, over the years, different competition formats
Most of the Salva Vida League titles are distributed among the so-called big teams; Olimpia, Motagua, Real España and Marathón. Being the super classic of the Liga Salva Vida Olimpia vs Motagua, being the largest clubs in titles, I have allowed these clubs to represent Honduras internationally in more opportunities. At the international level, Olimpia is the most successful club in the league, having obtained two CONCACAF titles and a classification to the club world cup.
