About the F16 Fighting Falcon
In the early 1970s, the US Air Force initiated the Lightweight Fighter (LFX) program to develop an agile, inexpensive dogfighter to augment the newly acquired F-15 Eagle. The YF-16 was designed around the highly innovative and advanced Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-100 engine, the same one that powered the F-15 Eagle.
The F16 Fighting Falcon was one of the first fighter planes that incorporated a revolutionary design with no connection between the pilot and the plane’s control systems. Fly-by-wire was born, which would aid in increased cornering speeds and improved manoeuvrability. If the computer navigation should fail, a pilot wouldn’t be able to land the warplane. The plane relied completely on computers.
The Fighting Falcon is both capable of air-2-air combat as well as air-to-ground attack runs. This makes it a very dangerous and versatile military aircraft. It is armed with a M61 Vulcan 20 mm cannon and a wide range of smart bombs and air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.
The F-16 is still in service by many airforces around the world and different configurations are known. It is a truly remarkable capable piece of kit.
