The International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes is a methodological tool based on internationally agreed descriptions and principles with the aim of improving the coherence and international comparability of crime statistics, which also aims to improve the capacity for analysis at the national and international level.

The ICCS provides a common conceptual framework to systematically prepare and compare statistical data from different criminal justice institutions and jurisdictions, as well as between countries in the region and the world.

The International Classification of Crimes for Statistical Purposes is a tool that also contributes to efforts to measure the indicators associated with Goal 16 within the framework of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, the ICCS allows us to standardize the measurement of indicators related to violence, security and justice of the SDGs. The Center of Excellence's priority is to provide assistance and support that makes possible the appropriation of the ICCS by public servants in charge of producing crime statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean. One of the most far-reaching mechanisms to achieve this goal is the development of a mobile application for consultation and support for national ICCS adoption processes.
