해 Last year, the American Pediatric Association published a new medical guideline. The idea is that from the time a child is born, care must be taken to develop language skills, including reading and writing. In other words, it means that pediatricians can reiterate how important it is for parents to read a lot of fairy tales to their children. A number of studies were cited based on reading aloud to examine differences in language development and academic achievement between children who grew up and children who did not.

Many studies have shown that the impact of reading a book is significant, but there is a lack of research that explains exactly how the child's brain develops and how it makes a difference later. There is a recent study that has revealed to us what we did not know before.

A study in the American Pediatrics this month filmed using functional magnetic resonance imaging how the brain responds when children between the ages of three and five read a storybook at the appropriate level. The response was different depending on whether or not the child had read the storybook at home. In other words, the parent's parietal, temple, and laryngeal cortex responded to the child's reading of a lot of fairy tales at home.

“This area is very important for synthesizing and grasping information from hearing, vision and other stimuli.”

Dr. John S. Hutton of Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

The same areas of the brain that are most active when a child who can read on their own read the same book, Dr. Hutton says that the reactions in the brain when a younger child reads a book are basically no different. Children who read a lot of fairy tales at home were especially active in the brain, where they process visual information. Dr Hutton explains that imagination can be different in that the area that processes visual information is activated even though you are listening to someone's voice instead of listening to the picture.

“Children listen while visualizing stories in their minds. For example, when we hear the sentence 'frog jumped over a log', children imagine how they would draw a frog and a log and then jump over it. ”

Hearing fairy tales read by his mom and dad, and pointing at the pictures in the book with his eyes, the brains of the children made better visual images. Later on, I was better able to read, remember exactly the image, or figure out the plot.

“(Visualizing imagination) makes a difference in the ability of things to understand what a character's behavior is. Later, when you read a book with no letters, it also affects your reading comprehension. A child who has a good understanding of the story is also likely to develop reading habits later. ”

Dr Hutton also added that reading books promotes creativity that is difficult to develop by showing comic books or videos.

“If you show the story in video and animation, the child doesn't have to imagine the story in his head. With no room for imagination, the child eats the finished product. ”

There is a study that tells the story of the person in front of you and the sound flowing out of the screen.

It is well known how important it is to develop a child's language skills by listening to a variety of vocabulary and expressions. One study found that the number of vocabulary children exposed to poor ages at the age of three were less than one million less than their peers in wealthy homes.

Another study is about reading children's books or just talking a lot, which will help children develop their language skills. This month, Psychological Science included a study comparing words used in fairy tales with words used in everyday conversation. Jessica Montag, of the Riverside State University of California, who led the study, explains that there was a clear difference.

“Fairy tale books contain a much wider variety of vocabulary and words that will rarely come out in ordinary conversation. If it's not a book, it means there's no way we can touch it. ”

The results of the study are as follows. Reading children's books to fairy tales has the effect of training children to be exposed to various vocabulary and at the same time to imagine visual images related to words and vocabulary. Children learn to express simple stories in different vocabulary.

The Reach Out and Read campaign, which shows the importance of reading fairy tales to children, distributed 6.8 million fairy tales through more than 5,600 programs this year. Parents who participated in the campaign read more to their children and improved their vocabulary. In a sense, it's common sense and obvious, but the results of the research are significant.

“Everyone knows that reading books to a child is a good thing in many ways. But I want to emphasize once again to parents that reading books consistently has a huge impact on children's transition from speaking to reading and writing later on. ”

Finally, let me end with one more fact that everyone knows. The time of reading fairy tales in bed is often a beautiful memory for parents and children. It is important for everyone to have a lovely face-to-face, or to fall asleep while listening to a story with their mother or dad in their arms. The children love it so much that they want to hear the same story hundreds, thousands, and again, and their parents suddenly faintly read the fairy tale book. (New York Times)
