Dream catchers were used by shamans as healing methods. These objects are said to help the owner to have good dreams and to keep positive ideas with them.
A dreamcatcher in an object of ethnic origin, consisting of a ring in which a kind of web like a spider web is woven, where bad dreams will be trapped and decorated with feathers and some beads. Its origin comes from the Ojibwa people, one of the last native peoples of North America.
Traditionally, the Ojibwa made dreamcatchers by tying red-dyed vegetable strands inside a circular or teardrop-shaped wooden ring, resulting in a web similar to a cobweb. The dreamcatcher, hung over the head of the bed, was used as a spell to protect children from nightmares and evil visions. The Ojibwa believed that a dreamcatcher filtered people's dreams, so that good dreams passed through the center towards the sleeping person while bad dreams were captured by the mesh and vanished with the first ray of light at dawn.
During the pan-Indian movement in the 60s and 70s they were adopted by the North American Indians of different peoples and even considered as a symbol of cultural identification; however, other natives consider them tacky objects, manufactured for commercial purposes with no awareness of their operation. Dream catchers have become popular objects around the world.
